While many awake to this day with Easter baskets, Easter Eggs, and Easter celebrations, I awoke this morning to a tune in my head and heart…
- I serve a risen Savior
He’s in the world today.
I know that He is living,
Whatever men may say.
I see His hand of mercy;
I hear His voice of cheer;
And just the time I need Him
He’s always near. - He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today!
He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way.
He lives, He lives, salvation to impart!
You ask me how I know He lives?
He lives within my heart.
While it may be very controversial, I choose NOT to call today “Easter”… because of the origin of the name. Easter comes from the name of a pagan goddess (Eastre or Eostre) and a festival to that goddess. It is so sad to me that we followers of Christ have allowed for things of the world to hijack and sap the true focus, truth, and joy of this day. Instead of blindly following this path, I recognize and honor today as Resurrection Sunday.
It is because of this day so many years ago, when Jesus Christ rose from the dead, that I now work with children who are orphaned, living in the streets, and youth at risk throughout Latin America. Because of Jesus’ resurrection… His victory over, death, hell, and sin… I have a deep hope and joy of an eternity with God (as well as this present and amazing life here on earth) and I am deeply convicted that I can not keep it to myself!! I choose to share this great news with those who will really receive it and recognize the great hope that the resurrection brings them… the children who have no family and home. Because of Jesus and His resurrection these children have a chance to know an eternal home and family, and a present reality of a daily love relationship with God! This day for them, as well as for us, should be the most precious of days… not for sweets, bunnies, or food, but because of the eternal freedom and hope this day carries with it!
Please be mindful today of what this day truly means… Jesus conquered death, hell, and sin… left an empty tomb… removed the sting of death… and offers us the hope of an eternity with God Almighty Himself, if we just believe and receive His gift of grace! Lets not miss this gift and be distracted by eggs and bunnies! HAPPY RESURRECTION DAY!!
