Birthdays and Holidays

Happy Birthday to YOU, Happy Birthday to YOU, Happy Birthday dear _________, Happy Birthday to YOU!!

How many of you have enjoyed this song sung to you by friends, family, and loved ones on that special day of your birth? Its a nice feeling to be appreciated and celebrated. Its nice having people around us who want us to feel special on such a special day!

What holiday is your favorite? Are there any family traditions for any holidays? Is Thanksgiving a time of family, food, and football at your home? Do you have to travel for Christmas plans? Do you hang out with friends to watch fireworks and celebrate on the 4th of July? Who do you share your New Years kiss with on New Years Eve at midnight?

While many may experience a lot of these joys and shared occasions in life, I know that in my own life, and in the lives of most orphaned children I work with, holidays and birthdays are more often dreaded than anticipated. As these days approach, a deep impending loneliness also approaches for many without family. In other cultures where poverty is rampant, most of these dear children are way more familiar with the smack of loneliness than with the embrace of loved ones on these days.

It is my heart and hope to see fewer and fewer orphaned and street children dread holidays and birthdays, but rather find consistent and faithful people in their lives who will love them and celebrate theirs lives. What are some good ways to see this change come about? How can you and I be a difference for these children? Let me know your thoughts and ideas!
